PATRICIA WELLS AT HOME IN PROVENCE: Recipes Inspired By Her Farmhouse In France

PATRICIA WELLS AT HOME IN PROVENCE: Recipes Inspired By Her Farmhouse In France

  • Used Book in Good Condition

For the past fifteen years, Patricia Wells has been carrying on a love affair with a region of France, a centuries-old farmhouse, and a cuisine. Provence is uniquely blessed with natural beauty as well as some of the world’s most appealing foods and liveliest wines Wells’s culinary skills have transformed the signature ingredients of this quintessential French countryside into recipes so satisfying and so exciting that they will instantly become part of your daily repertoire.

Here are over 175 recipes from Wells’s farmhouse kitchen, including whole chapters on salads, vegetables, pasta, and bread There are simple but imaginative “palate openers,” such as Tuna Tapenade and Curried Zucchini Blossoms, and soul-satisfying soups, with such delights as Monkfish Bouillabaisse with Aroli, Wells’s own brilliant interpretation of a Provencal classic. When it comes to meat and poultry, Wells offers earthy daubes, the slow-simmered stews so beloved by the French, and such melt-in-your-mouth delicacies as Butter-Roasted Herbed Chicken You will savor Wells’s fish and shellfish creations with recipes like Seared Pancetta-Wrapped Cod. And no meal would be complete without a delight from the treasure trove of desserts here, including Cherry-Almond Tart and Winemaker’s Grape Cake.

Illustrated with famed photographer Robert Fréson’s captivating pictures, Patricia Wells at Home in Provence is a book you’ll want to revisit time and again.Tomato clafoutis, herb-cured filet of beef Carpaccio, garlic family soup, Catalan tuna daube: these and 171 other recipes pour off the pages of this sumptuous coffee-table cookbook by the author of Bistro Cooking and Simply French. Wells concentrates on coaxing the utmost flavor out of simple, fresh food, and her French recipes are not all swimming in cream, oils, and fats: the filet, for example, profits not from a heavy sauce but from being wrapped for two days in tarragon, parsley, basil, thyme, and salt. In a couple of places Wells even commits the heresy, for a French-style chef, of switching a red wine used to simmer meat to a white wine.

Paris, Rue des Martyrs: A Novel

Paris, Rue des Martyrs: A Novel

Amazon Bestseller in Literature & Fiction

Some encounters make a difference… Four strangers in Paris. Each one is on a quest: to uncover a family secret, to grasp a new chance at love, to repair mistakes of the past. Four stories entwine, four quests become one, as their paths cross amid the beauty, squalor, animation and desolation of a street in Paris, the rue des Martyrs.

Rafael’s search for his birth mother leads him to love and grim family secrets. Cecile’s view of herself as an unsatisfied housewife is radically changed by the promise of a passionate liaison. Andre, an aging actor, troubled by the arrival of the son he abandoned years ago, must make a choice, to either lose his son forever or put aside pride and seek redemption. Mira travels to Paris to begin a new life and forget about love… or so she intends.

Four strangers, four stories, one riveting novel.

If you like literary fiction, this novel set in France is for you. Fans of “Don’t Let Me Go” by Catherine Ryan Hyde will enjoy this story’s focus on its characters’ relationships and the importance of encounters, while fans of “Let the Great World Spin” by Colum McCann will enjoy the tale of a dynamic city and those who live in it, showing the romance of everyday Paris life.

Interview with the Author

Q. What was your inspiration to write Paris, Rue des Martyrs?

A. City life inspired me. The idea that every day, we might pass the same people as we walk down the street, yet what do we know about their lives? What would happen if our paths crossed? One of my favorite genres is literary fiction, so I decided to write a novel in that vein about life-changing encounters, liaisons and entwined paths.

Q. What kind of story is Paris, Rue des Martyrs?

A. I hope it will be an emotional read. Paris, Rue des Martyrs is about the importance of encounters. It is a love story, a story of friendship, family life, and coming of age. The novel is about love and loss, and healing wounds of the past. And it is a Paris love story, of course. It’s not your classic Paris romance, but rather a different take of the types of relationships one encounters in this fabulous city: a French affair with a twist.

Q. So many books have been written with Paris as the setting. What sets yours apart?

A. Many books are about the Paris of berets and baguettes. Paris, Rue des Martyrs is about the reality of Paris life… living in a Montmartre neighborhood, sitting at a café, being Parisian by adoption in this melting pot of a city.

If you enjoy stories of encounters, family secrets & relationships, I think you’ll enjoy Paris, Rue des Martyrs!

The Martha Stewart Holiday Collection: Homemade Holidays is all about the art of making food and decorating for the Christmas or Hanukkah season. Woe be to anyone who views the four very diverse and remarkable Christmas dinner dishes here on an empty stomach: nothing will taste nearly as exciting. British chef Anne Willan drops by Stewart’s kitchen to make a hearty, standing rib roast with accompanying Yorkshire pudding—foods she grew up eating in the farm country north of York. Chef Mario Batali, an expert on foods of Southern Italy, does two segments, one resulting in a fantastic seafood salad (with lobster, calamari, mussels, peppers, and more) and the other an impossibly beautiful baccala ravioli, using fresh-made pasta pillows filled with a mix of baccala and riced potatoes, tossed in Batali’s red sauce with a hint of mint. Finally, chef Dan Silverman demonstrates how to remove pomegranate seeds from the fruit without too much hassle, and then add those seeds to an astonishing duck dish.

Playful and dazzling desserts include meringue mushrooms, which look just like the real thing, and a Birch de Noel made of chocolate and cream, laid out like a Yuletide log. Household decorating hints are both clever and simple, including the strategic placing of colorful bowls of fruits and candies on shelves, and the embellishing of homemade wreaths with colorful balls (small, pink ones from Japan are oddly magical), candy, and popcorn. A section on Hanukkah gifts and foods includes a nice idea for filling embossed bags with candies, and a variation on traditional potato pancakes that includes adding strips of carrots and parsnips. Suggestions for making gifts and wrapping round out this very pleasant disc. –Tom Keogh
