Commonly Genetically Engineered Foods

Any time you actually sit down and put a good deal of thought into the kinds of foods and products that are on the market today, but have you ever wondered what is lurking inside of them?

There are all sorts of additives and preservatives in a huge number of processed foods as well as chemicals that are added as pesticides and fertilizers to produce, additionally there are additives at the genetic level on many of the foods you eat every single day.

Genetically engineered foods are growing more and more popular with farmers and food manufacturers because of the hardiness of the seeds and plants insuring a good-sized crop which means a good-sized profit. However the jury is still out on whether or not genetically-modified foods are actually good for humans, animals in either adult or developmental stages.

Finding out what some of the more commonly genetically engineered foods are will give you a better understanding of what the healthier alternatives are that happen to be available to you. Commonly known as GMO's, genetically engineered foods are those that have been tweaked from their natural state.

In a laboratory, DNA from trout has been inserted into the DNA of the tomato seeds. This produces tomato seeds that are more resistant to cooler weather, ripen evenly and are resistant to harm from the pesticides used. The downside is that there is no currently credible testing for the long-term effects of these fruits and veggies on the human population.

Basically everything you buy in a box or a bag (unless it is organic) has been put through a process has been genetically engineered in some way, shape or form. For example, numerous baked goods contain ingredients that have had additives or preservatives mixed in. This is why so many organic bakeries are sprouting up using whole grains and wheat flour wherever possible. Wheat is now a GMO crop, so if you want to be sure you're not eating wheat that has been fused with beetle DNA, buy organic. The beets that make up the sugar in many foods are also genetically modified unless the package specifically states organic.

Even some of the pizza toppings or cereals that you like to enjoy tend to contain ingredients made with genetically engineered foods. Today, organic and natural foods are on the rise in many marketplaces because consumers are finally putting out the call to stop genetically engineered foods from hitting their dinner tables and making it into the lunches of their children.

You may even be surprised to know that it is very rare to find a restaurant today that does not carry food items on their menu that have not been genetically altered in some way.

The bottom line is this, it has all become a business of convenience and trying to make food items last longer and taste better. However, during the way, the health of consumers may be compromised in the future. As a consumer yourself, start looking at replacing your commonly used foods with organic alternatives. The more that you cut them out of your life, the better you will feel. As a matter of fact, cutting out commonly genetically engineered foods from your diet could even improve your health!
